Information about the environmental impact of an LNG Storage Facility in Howe Sound, British Columbia, Canada. Issues regarding environmental impacts can be complex, contradictory and confusing with many points of view. But, and this is the author's personal point of view, these issues are the most important aspect of this project. The visual impact, the small number of ongoing jobs, the tax base (unknown to date) are secondary to the health of the Howe Sound environment and the animals who inhabit it (including the two-legged variety).

"LNG does not explode. LNG tanks store the liquid at atmospheric pressure. For natural gas to burn, it must be mixed with air at a gas to air ratio of between 5 and 15%. Modeling of the absolutely worst case scenario by world class LNG authorities has determined that the maximum potential area for damage is limited to a 3.5 km radius. There would not be damage from an explosion but rather from the burning of natural gas vapours dispersing from the site. Analysis by these authorities of more plausible, though still unlikely, scenarios show that the area of influence would not exceed 500 m. Beyond this point, the gas dispersing from any failure would be at a concentration lower than one-half the lower flammability limit (i.e., less than one-half of 5%). There is no plausible event that would result in the release of liquid natural gas from the earthen dike surrounding the site." Doug Thorneycroft, Project
Manager
"No one knows when or just how big, but experts agree that we're in for a major earthquake. Are you ready for it? Do you know what it takes to survive? After a major earthquake, there's a good chance that traditional emergency response teams will be too busy to take care of you and your family."
